Oprah, Palin, and the November sweeps

Former Alaska Governor and Vice Presidential candidate, Sarah Palin, will appear on Oprah Whinfery’s show November 16th – just over a year after the former Wasilla Mayor’s supporters derided the talk-show host for shunning Palin, while having her rival ticket-head, Barack Obama on The Oprah Show.

Mr. Obama’s appearance drew criticism from both the right and left, arguing that his appearance was tantamount to endorsing his candidacy. Ms. Winfery denied that she was promoting the presidential candidate and responded by saying, “I agree that Sarah Palin would be a fantastic interview, and I would love to have her on after the campaign is over." Adding to the speculation that Oprah was in fact using her platform to throw support to the democrat.

The accusation led to a FEC ruling on April 14th of this year that stated Candidate Obama’s appearance did not violate campaign rules, even though the host of the most viewed daytime television show actively stumped for the democrat.

One wonders why Oprah would elect to have Mrs. Palin on, other than it most definitely would benefit both parties as the interview date will occur in during Nielsen ratings November sweeps and will be a day prior to the release of Palin’s book, Going Rogue, An American Life.

While Mrs. Palin’s book is sure to be a bestseller, it won’t debut alone, two editors from the far-left-of-center magazine, The Nation have also complied what is being billed as inauspicious biographical essays of Sarah Palin entitled Going Rouge: An American Nightmare, proof-positive the conservative hockey-mom scares the living wits out of far left “journalists” and activists alike (or who are one-in-the-same).

The biggest question is aside from trying to rig the November sweeps, why Oprah is having Palin on her show? The most logical conclusion is rebuilding a burned bridge to traditional soccer-moms torched from last year’s election run-up when Oprah shunned Palin.

Letting air out of the balloon

For a few hours, it captured the nation and caused every cable network to switch leads. It was perhaps one of the most bizarre headlines of the year thus far, boy in experimental weather balloon. Details came fast and speculation abounded about the whereabouts of a 6 year-old boy came into question when it was confirmed he was not in the balloon as had been previously reported.

It was yet another example of the media hyping before verifying…much like the numerous Katrina rumors about rapes, stabbings and like allegations in the Superdome. The boy’s family is still an enigma despite the fact they appear on a television reality show…muck like that of Candidate Obama versus President Obama.

The story, surely to garner Warhol’s 15 minutes of fame cliché, will quickly fade away as will the scrutiny of just how so many news organizations put hype before proof.
